Full Moon Fever

Audrey is obsessed with the moon.  Especially full moons.  Did you know that tonight it will be a full moon?  Yes?  Did you know that it is the Hunter's Moon on the 2455492.568th Julian Day at a distance of 398141km and an azimuth of 99 degrees 41' and 28"?  No?  Loser.  You clearly have not bought yourself the MoonPhase iPhone app.

I thought that this app would be a great idea for Audrey.  I bought it last night as I stood out in the cold watching Audrey do her monthly moondance, wondering if the moon was really full and, if not, how many more nights I would have of standing out in the cold watching her do her moondance.  For $1.99 I learned that I would have one more night of it, in addition to all of the information above. 

Audrey was an especially surreal sight last night because she still had her tutu on from ballet class.  She whirled around repeating her usual insightful observations ("There's the moon!  There it is!"), as I read her more facts from the app.  Eventually I started making up my own just to entertain myself...about how the moon was waning Billy Gibbons and waxing Uranus.  I knew it was time to come in when Audrey sat down and started looking at the moon on the iPhone rather than the one in the sky.  #iPhoneappbackfire

  1. I saw this app posted on someone's blog yesterday!

    Waxing gibbon is typical vernacular around here as Hubby is a middle school science teacher. I never learned the phases of the moon as a child but his students must know this to pass the state test.

    Audrey's behavior doesn't sound too bad unless you think its gateway behavior to wiccan. Or, maybe that's a good thing. For more on the religious aspects of stimming see JoyMama's post.

  4. Yeah, real world things have a tough time competing with technology. My son's thing is to watch videos of subway trains on YouTube, so my husband bought a cheapie video camera and said "let's make our own videos!" Not interested.

  5. Charlotte loves a full moon too. She had a moon obsession about 2 years ago. Her preschool teacher did whole moon unit in class just for her. Last night as she walking upstairs to bed she gasped, "Guess what I seeeeeeee!"

  8. I know some parents of kids on the spectrum who track the moon cycles because they swear it affects their children's behavior. Apparently, they don't do well when the moon is full. I haven't experienced this pattern with my girl!

    BTW, I loved your made-up facts! Too funny!

  11. so funny- i noticed that bri loved the moon a few years ago- he wasn't talking about it (still doesn't actually) but if we are out doing things when the moon is out he'll walk into things because he is so fixated on the moon! I bought him a "Moon in my Room" a few years ago- just a moon that goes on the wall and will go through the phases naturally or with a click on the little remote that comes with it.

  12. Unfortunately, iPhone videos taken in even dusky light turn out pitch black. So you'll just have to use your imaginations to conjure Audrey's moondance.

    @TherExtras: If she was a practicing Wiccan, we'd be calling this moon the Blood Moon and not the Hunter's Moon. Yeah, my app told me that too.

    @Heather: We have "Moon in my Room" too...used it as a reinforcer for a while until her interest faded. Nothing like the real thing I guess...but I love that toy!

  14. LMAO! I've said this before, what we do for out kids! You're going to look back on all this and say "JC, what the hell was I thinking"...ok, maybe you won't.

    At least she's not obsessed over ceiling fans like my friend's boy was.

  20. More proof that the moon effects us all. I would say Audrey's moon dance is a good thing if it tires her out enough to sleep on a full moon night. Having a child up most of the night because of a full moon is no fun! Thanks for sharing this wonderful story, especially the tutu part : )
